Activist Fatally Shot in West Bank as Clashes Escalate

On September 6, 2024, 26-year-old dual U.S. and Turkish national activist Aysennur Ece was fatally shot while protesting Israeli illegal settlements in the West Bank.

Ece had recently graduated from the University of Washington in the U.S. and was one of the organizers of pro-Palestinian protests at the university. Witnesses claim that Ece was shot in the head by Israeli military forces. While the U.S. government has confirmed her death, they have yet to verify that she was killed by Israeli forces.

Turkey, which has had strained relations with Israel since the latest round of the Israel-Palestine conflict, condemned the Israeli government, calling Ece’s death the “murder” of a Turkish citizen. In the past ten days, Israeli military raids in the West Bank have resulted in at least 39 fatalities.
